Ive got a 02, 2500, 100,000 miles, 6spd trans. Last couple of days have noticed a "rattle" comming from what sounds like the transmission. Only occurs on cold starts (where the truck has been parked for several hours). Noise last only for 5 or 10 seconds then goes away. Truck runs out fine, shifts ok. Wanted some fast advice with the hopes of catching whatever this is before the truck lays down on me.

It's probably nothing if it lasts that short of time.

 

check fluid level/condition, these need regular service to live.

 

Does the rattle stop if you push the clutch in? If so most likely it's the clutch. My clutch does it sometimes, mostly on really cold mornings.

I would get it checked and serviced. I did not do this with my 01. Luckily I was still under warranty. I lost 6th gear in -40 weather...the chatter initially was thought to be the clutch...put a Con FE in anyway after that. Once the cold weather hit again...the chatter returned and then would go away. The dealer told me that the synchros were bad and pieces started to come loose and eventually I lost 6th. Disclaimer; This is what the dealer told me.
