2001 auto trans erratic shifting issues

My friend has a completely stock 01 CTD /47re. Last week he started having some strange issues with the trans. He has had zero problems with the trans to date.
1) Sometimes when starting out from a stop the trans starts off in 2nd gear. This also happens from a very slow roll, like if you were about to stop but then the light changed and you take off.
2) Sometimes while sitting at a stop the trans will just jerk like it was trying to down shift after the truck has been sitting there for a minute or two.
3) Sometimes it shifts through the gears very fast.

You may notice that I said "Sometimes" before each symptom. These things only happen occasionaly but have started happening more and more each time he drives it. The truck has 61,000 trouble free miles on it and it has lived a pretty easy life, only towing his 10,000lb boat occasionally. He has not changed the fluid or filter yet but he is going to do that in the next couple days.
Any ideas what could cause all of these problems to start happening at the same time? Although the issues are very different in nature the fact that they all started at the same time leads us to believe it would be one thing causing all of them...

?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????

From what I have been told. It sound like a spring and ball valve sticking. Or a cracked rubber valve. I think the ball and spring can be fixed with out rebuilding the transmision. I don't know about the rubber valve.

If you have a real good transmision shop, they should be able to tell you. Most don't charge to test drive a truck. They would also be able give you a price on fixing it. Most good transmision shop want try to sell you a rebuild if you don't need it.

With that many miles and no fluid and filter changes, check the fluid color. If the fluid is not bright red, don't have to be burnt. I would have a shop change the fluid, filter and flush the converter and transmision cooler. This will give you clean fluid though the whole system.

get a scan on the codes. most likely he needs a governor valve and solinoid. not uncommon to see.

Mike,
Give Tim Barber a call or PM. He's real good with these trannys and he's down here in Norfolk, VA. You should have his number in the VADTR membership list I sent out to all the Virginia DTR members.

I'll second the vote to contact Tim.
He guided me through a week's worth of troubleshooting and finally rebuilt mine with Goerend tranny parts.

It could even be something as simple as an APPS reset, or even dirty battery terminals confusing the computer.

I had the same symptoms on my 01, ended up with a new valve body at 40K miles.
No warnings, just decided it would start out in second gear rather than first. Don't know the complete history of my truck as I bought it used at 30K miles. For all I know the previous owner could have been towing 20K in overdrive?
