2001 or 2002

Hi everyone...I am new here. I enjoy this board very much, lots of informations and bunch of great guys. At the moment I own 95 2500 Cummins (auto tranny). Love the truck, but not enough power for pulling my holiday trailer. I need advice. I plan to purchase a used 4X4 dually Cummins 2001 or 2002. Is there any diffrence between this 2 truck? Should I purchase 6 spd or auto with 3:55 dif? Infuture we also plan to get a bigger Fifth Wheel maybe up to 12000 Ibs GVWR. Thanks in advance.

Re:2001 or 2002

welcome to the site...I just wanted to comment on your current 95'...i hope your not getting rid of it because of lack of power only, their are many ways to get alot more power out of your current truck, probably alot more that you even want!...as for the 01' - 02' diff's, i don't think their is any big differences but more people will chime in soon...

Howdy Purelivin, welcome to the show. If it was me I would go with the 6sp especially if you are going to upgrade to a larger 5er. The auto is rated at 16,000 GCW with the 3:55's and 19,000 with the 4:10's. The six speed is rated higher with each set of gears compared to the auto. I think I am correct on these numbers, if not someone will jump in and fix it.
Its also a personal preference. Do you like to shift or not?

Don't like shift. It's a pain for everyday drive in the city with stick. How about auto tranny with after market chips?

Re:2001 or 2002

I have a 2001 with an auto and I went aftermarket on the auto. I have NO regrets about having an auto but the factory auto needs help. There are aftermarket builds that can make that auto take anything you throw at it!!!

The difference to note about the 2001 to 2001.5 is notable as far as the 2001.5 has 4 wheel disk brakes.

Also the HO model was available as a standard only ???

Wasn't too much of a consideration to me as you can pull alot of power out of these motors anyway...

On the 01, the front axle disconnect is in the axle, and the 02 is in the transfer case. This means that the 02's front axle is always turning, and the 01 isn't.

But not all 2002's.
Change was made mid production year, after Dodge depleted the supply of the old front axles, making mine technically a 2002.5 .

If your going to add power to the factory auto, you will need to upgrade it so you don't destroy it!

02 should have the most buggs worked out. Lift pump injection pump 4 wheel disks. Its loaded. Now as for yours lacking Hp if that is the only reason you are choosing a new truck I would highly recommned you look into modding yours you can easily have a 400 HO daily driver there if you want with no running issues.

Re:2001 or 2002

Just to add something I read on some other posts. The '02's without the axle disconnect may have vibration problems around 60 mph and up. This is in direct relation to the few changes they made to the front axle. 4x4's only of coarse. The changes are the front axle housing was moved farther foward and and the pinion was rotated downward. The vacumm axle disconnect was removed which makes the driveshaft turn all the time and being at more of an angle can give a vibration. Not sure why these changes where made but like I said there has been some guys talking about what I just listed. Other than that the only things I can think of are that I also heard of guys saying that they dont have all the goodies that the '01's have possibly because of DC triming down on the assembly line, maybe tooling for the '03's?

Re:2001 or 2002

Thank you all. My truck just hit 300000 km and is a little rusty between the fender and front door. It also needs 4 new rubbers and a set of new batteries. I am debating on weather to sell it or not. If i were to repair the truck, I'm not sure how much it will cost. Plus the lack of power >. These are some of my reasons why I want to get a new truck.
JAMIE: If i decide to keep this truck... what do i need to do to increase the HP? Do i need to do some modification to the tranny? Do you have any idea how much it would cost me? or would it be cheaper to buy a new truck? :P

Re:2001 or 2002

Pure you can make some huge power with that baby for little money and yeah you have to do the trans my money as always with the tranny is on DTT I have it and many other high HP trucks. Although the others make a good unit it will be your decision get reading the DTT and ATS forums and it will be clear to you which you want. The trans in mine as about 4500 bucks canadian installed. Thats a full blown race tranny. Now as for HP im not fully educated on the 12 valve but you can adjust the star wheel do a plate and injectors delievery valves GSK KDP ummm... Turbo etc. Put a post up in the High performance section asking about this state what you plan to do and how much HP you want. If you decide injectors contact Don M here on the board for a set of his EDM injectors they are the shiznat!

Re:2001 or 2002

Get a 2001.5 truck.

Meaning it has the 4 wheel discs.
