1999 cat converter removed?

I noticed it looks like a converter just before the factory muffler is this correct? Is there any power or milage to be had from taking it off hollowing it out and putting it back on? I am interested in a muffler in the near future what is the one of choice on this truck? Anyone run Borla? Thanks CD

Its a resonator, its hollow no mileage or hp gains.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Most just straight pipe it and live with the terrible noise. In fact they say it's great music. Exhaust mods do not increase much, if any on stock engine. All known aftermarket mufflers are noisy, even the advertised 'quiet' ones.
