You'd have to use the cam out of a 12 valve.

There is a belt driven mechanical pump on the market.

Are you asking about the fuel pump or the injection pump? Because the OEM fuel pump is electric and there is mechanical fuel pumps you can replace it with. But the VP is mechanical/electric. Its driven by the engines timing gears but the solenoids inside are electric controlled by an electric computer. The only way to make the injection pump fully mechanical is by doing a P-pump conversion.

Thats a step backwards. Most aftermarket cams have the lift pump lobe on them.

Call cummins and do a cpl (control parts list) it will have the part number of every part in your motor. Then see if your cam has a fuel pump lobe by part number.

The 01 stock cams do not have the pump lobe. However if you put in an aftermarket cam it should have one best to check before ordering though to make sure if you go that route.

I have an aftermarket cam in my truck with the pump lobe and I am running a 12valve mechanical pump in place of the stock electric carter pump. Works great and have no worry about low pressure.

There are other aftermarket mechanical fuel pumps that are belt driven and work fine. I was running one of those before my current setup for 100k miles.

I am a bit confused with this? why would the cam have to be replaced. Can't the electric lift pump be used for fuel supply and just change the timing case, injection pump, injectors and lines, and not worry about the cam?

If you are going to do all of that it would be cheaper to drop in a 12 valve. I am pretty sure you would also have to change the head since the injectors will not fit the 24 valve head so basically you just built a 12 valve engine.

I think the original poster was wanting to change the problem prone electric fuel pump to a mechanical pump like the 12 valves. It can be done easy once you have a cam with the fuel pump lobe on it.

It can also be done without a cam swap by using a belt driven mechanical pump there are at least a couple types out there.

Now if he was wanting to change his vp44 over to p7100 mechanical injection pump certainly doable but significantly more involved and expensive (will still need a different lift pump mechanical or electric to boot since the 7100 wants significantly higher pressure than the vp pump.

I am not arguing that it wouldn't be cheaper to change out the 24v for a 12v. While I have no problems with my 24v right now I just didn't know what the main purpose for changin the cam was for. If it is mainly to run a mechanical fuel pump than it seems a waste to me, but if it is to gain more power, better mileage, ect then that makes sense.
I personally prefer all mechanical but if anything happens to my VP I would consider either the 12V swap or p-pumping my 24v.

On the Gen 2 24V, your best bet is a good lift pump and a FP gauge between the filter & VP 44. There are lots of good aftermarket kits. I think the Airtex is a reasonable choice, although opinons vary on this. A 80-100 micron prefilter is recommended, a simple mesh job. Summit sells them. You can get 2 Airtex for less than one of the higher dollar options. One for backup on the road.
If you want mechanical, sell your truck & find a 12V you like, it will be easier. Not necessarily better, other than the mechnical aspect.
A big line lit from Vulcan may not be a bad option either, it makes sense to have the LP by the tank and then there are only 3 nuts to take it off. No hot motor, either.
Good luck with your truck!!
