$2500 for a VP???

Well my truck spent the day at the local cummins repair shop. They worked on it all day but didn't get it fixed.....said they think it is the injection pump, but not totally sure. Seems to me they should have been able to figure it out sooner, but who knows. Anyway, when I asked them what a new pump was gonna cost me they said $2500. I thought that was installed, but thats just for the pump itself! I've been reading on here, and looking at some places to buy a pump, and it looks like I can get one for half that or a little less.

I don't know if my truck has some kind of special pump on it or what. It is a 1999 F800, but I don't see why it would be any different than a regular pickup injection pump? The motor is rated at 190 HP which seems weird though since the pickup motors are rated at like 235 or something aren't they.

Can anybody tell me how I can find out what pump I need exactly so I can look around and try to find one myself? Do I just use the Engine Identification Number?

If this thing wasn't so big, I'd just tow it home and work on it myself instead of paying them $75/hr to not figure out whats going on.

Tell them to pound salt. $2500 for a vp is criminal. Heck you can get a hot rod VP44 for $1800.

I dont know what an F800 is but if it has a 5.9 ISB, then its the same VP.. Should cost $1200 for the pump. What they charge for install, is of course up to them. But $2500 for just the pump... you should had Edit slapped them....

That is the sort of thing that gives certain dealers a bad name.

You should post the name of the dealer all over the internet....

My VP44 was only $1600 installed at a Cummins shop in Colorado. The Dodge dealer there wanted $2600 TOTAL. Not sure what your's is, but mine is a 24v.

check out www.mwfi.com, they should have the pump you need, provided yours is the 24v with a VP-44. Yours should be the medium duty pump which I believe the part# ends in 029, possibly with a X or some other letter after the 9. The medium duty applications had a lower power output for longevity and reliability. Unfortunately the pumps are not interchangeable with the ones in the Dodge's, the programming is differen. MWFI's prices are very reasonable and I don't think they charge you a core as long as you get the old one back to them in 30 days. They even have package deals where you can get the VP pump and a new lift pump, as the lift pump usually goes out and wipes the VP out soon after. It really shouldn't have been that hard for the Cummin's dealer to diagnose the problem though, they are pretty simple. I wouldn't be afraid to change the VP yourself though, its very easy.

The truck is a Ford F800. Its a medium duty truck. It's a 1999 and has a 24v 5.9 ISB in it. I'm gonna talk to them tomorrow and tell them where to stick their $2500 pump. After I got thinking about it, I have full coverage on this thing, and I think I get a free tow up to 100 miles. I think I'll get this thing home and try and tackle this pump myself. Either that or to another repair shop anyway. Thanks for the info. I thought they were trying to give it to me in the..............................you know what!

I had a hot rod pump INSTALLED for $2000 at a local diesel shop. The pump itself was $1700. If it is any, the dealer was looking at $3500 installed

I just got off the phone with the shop. I guess now they changed their mind and it isn't the injection pump. They said they had been working on it outside for a day, but decided to pull it in the shop last night and something strange happened. They said when they put it in any gear it will run just fine, but there is no throttle, it will only idle. If you fire it up and leave it in park or neutral it will run very rough for about 10 seconds and then die, but if you fire it up and put it in a gear real quick it smooths out and will idle like normal but have no power.

Sounds like it must be some kind of switch to do with the transmission, and since this truck is a Ford with a Cummins engine and an Allison transmission they are having trouble finding any kind of schematics on it.

Anybody know any Allison shops I could contact to run this by them?

I did mention to him that the price he quoted on the VP was outrageous and that I could get one for less than half that.......he didn't have much of a response, just kind of changed the subject.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for all the good info. I've always worried about the injection pump in the back of my mind, but now it doesn't seem so bad since it looks like I can do it myself and only cost about 1200.

Sounds like the shop doesn't know what they are doing. Those are symptoms of a bad APPS sensor. Did they check for codes?

They couldn't get any codes I guess. What is an APPS sensor? I think I agree with you that they don't know what they're really doing.

It is the throttle position sensor, but Dodge calls it APPS- Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor
