I noticed in the light rain yesterday that only the high and low wiper settings worked. None of the intermitant settings worked. Anyone know where I should look off hand before I start to trouble shoot?

 

Find a wiring diagram & a multi meter and test that the signals from colum sw. are working .
The sw. cannot handle the load so most are going to relays , higher pos. from relays .

 

i don't have any direct experience on your 1st gen, but i learned a lot about my 01 and tried to post most of it. do a search on intermittent wipers for a lot of info including stuff on the intermittent wiper control (CTM). I started by removing and testing my multifunction switch on the column. Its a variable resistor and there is test procedure in the Haynes manual. At one extreme it had 0 resistence, and then climbed in steps. Mine was good, but since i had it off i replaced it anyway ($42). In my 01, that switch sent variable voltage to my CTM, i think it was about 9-12.5. A wiring diagram is very very helpful. Good Luck.

 

It's the switch or the module.

Pull the switch, pin 1 is at the top farthest away from the column, pins are numbered from top to bottom.

In the delay positions, starting from slowest to fastest, there will be continuity between:
8 & 9
2 & 4
1 & 2
1 & 4
In the slowest position, resistance should be between 270k and 330k ohms. Resistance should decrease as you go to the faster settings until you have 0 ohms shown on the ohmmeter at the fastest setting. If this is all good, it's the module.
