Will an auto hold up to just hauling a load of tools?

Will an auto hold up to just hauling a load of tools?

I have the 2005 for heavy pulling and I need to replace my 454 (8mpg) with a Dodge that gets at least 16 mpg, perferably a 2wd. I have a utility body with the full canopy and it probably weighs about 4000 lbs loaded. I'm finding a lot of auto trucks available that are in great shape with low miles.
Will a stock 1st gen auto hold up to commuting to work with the utility body loaded?
Also, how much more diesel does the auto use over a stick tranny? If a stock tranny needs overhauled, what would the cost be? Thanks

Do you live in mountain area? ~ 11,000 - 12,000# GVW is no problem. I am at 25,000#+ frequently (with stock auto).

The auto should be fine, best with an external underbed cooler, and a better torque Converter (hughes for cheap ~ $400 and DTT for expensive ~$800) + 2nd gen flex plate + 3200 spring will make you much happier. A stock Auto rebuild is ~ $1000 and you can add 47rh parts to beef.

Economy is ~ 10% better with Manual (from what I see) ~17mpg auto ~ 18.5 manual

Be careful of $1000 auto tranny rebuilds- you get what you pay for (or dont pay for). A good rebuild with good parts and a decent warranty (that the guy/ shop will stand behind) will run $2000-2500.

Personally, I wont have another auto, unless I buy it cheap to resell. They just suck too much power from your low end. Keep an eye out for a good used stick- they are out there. One may have to do a bit of travelling to get it done......
