when are head studs required

At what hp will head studs and new gaskit be needed.

Studs are never a bad idea if you have the cash, but I would conservatively say that a 1st gen putting 400 hp to the rear wheels is in need of head studs.

I agree but if the head gasket goes the studs would be a great addition at any horse power.
