What does "turbo bark" sound like?

I'm not sure but this may explain what I hear every now and then. At first I thought it was the throwout bearing going bad but it has done this ever since it was new and only intermittently when I'm clutching.

It's like:
RPMs up to 2200 or so....in with clutch....kind of chirp going DOWN in pitch. Could this be the bearing or the turbo?

If it's the bearing wouldn't the pitch go UP as the bearing spins up on the arms of the clutch mechanism?

Any thoughts???

If it only happens when you let up on the gas quickly, it's the turbo barking. If it still does it when you roll gently out of the gas, it's a drivetrain noise.

No, it only happens when I've spooled it up some and then let off quickly, like to shift gears. I think it's turbo bark because it only does it every now and then and if it was the throwout bearing going bad it should do it all the time. Plus if it's the bearing, it's been "going out" for almost 13 years now

Thanks

GAS??? Since when do we have gas around here?

Just kidding. Anyways, it is a very strange low pitched grunt (it seriously sounds like a bark) that happens when you are making too much boost and let off the throttle really fast.

Have you ever noticed that sled pullers always goose the throttle right when they stop? That's because they don't want to get off the 50psi too quick and bark the turbo...

And BTW: Barking is BAD, don't do it.

Since I'm too lazy to type "accelerator pedal", Mr. Smartypants.

Ah, but there's no throttle on a diesel, either. Gotcha!

Throttle is just defined as the regulation of engine speed. You been sniffin too many tailpipes???

Just kidding! I don't know much about gassers, and I know the term comes from them... but webster's makes it sound like you can use the word for "the regulation of engine speed".

But it also relates it to "choke."

I don't know what to think.... maybe I'll just stick to "go pedal".

My turbo sounds like it has a loud Blow Off Valve everytime I shift.

Sounds sorta similar to the sound of a bullet ricocheting through a canyon.

I can't describe the sound in words...i can only make the noice in person or you can hear the thing from about a mile away.

I like the sound...it scares people more than the 5" tailpipe.

That sound is fine, mine does it too... the bark is bad though. The whistly-ping you hear is just the boost ecacuating the turbo.

I like it too.

Not to mention gettin' off the diesel just doesn't have the same ring to it. Kinda like Arlo Guthrie's lyrics, "...inch by inch I'm gonna watch this garden grow...". It just don't work in Canada "... centimeter by centimeter I'm gonna watch this garden grow..."

Yup. The turbo is moving a greater volume of air than the engine can evacuate, so it (the air) has to go backwards through the intake piping and turbo. The map slots on WH1C and HX35 style compressor housings all but eliminate this problem on most trucks.
