we are towing your vehicle...

I'm a student at Penn College of Technology, and as I mentioned earlier, I broke the pinion shaft in my dana 70 rear. After a few days of searching I found a dana 60 out of a 93 d350 gasser. On my way back from picking up the axle I got a call from the penn college police saying that I was not allowed to be working on my truck in the parking lot. I told the officer that there wasn't much I could do now seeing that I had already pulled the 70 out and had the truck on stands. He told me to go ahead and do what I needed to get the truck out of there. So today, two days later, I get a call in class from the police again. They said that my truck was going to be towed if it wasn't moved in the next few hours. I told my professor what the situation was and he let me leave alone with a couple other guys from my diesel class. After two hours of working out butts off we got the 60 cleaned up, put new seals in it, put the brakes from the 70 on it, and got it bolted to the truck. thank God for good friends!! Now for my question... How long do you think a dana 60 will last if I take it easy. I plan on rebuilding the 70 and puting it on during Christmas break. sorry for the long post.

Turn down your fuel screw so as not to tempt the 60 with your right foot.

What trans do you have? I wouldn't worry much with an auto. I'd take it easy on a stick. FWIW my crew has a 60 rear with a powertrax 3.54. Occasionally I'm not nice to it, but I have another 60 to toss in it if it goes south on me.

Sorry to hear your troubles. My son is a Penn College grad. Sounds like you have at least a temporary solution. If I can be of any help, let me know. I'm about an hour away, but am in "Bill-town" several times a week.

A friend of mine put a Dana 60 4:10 posi on his 7.3International f250 automatic....didnt last more than, if I remember correctly, 2-3months. Granted he was running 44"s on it, off and on a lot of the time.......but still.
It broke and I remember him saying, "EDIT...I thought Danas were tough!"
When it finally gave out, he took the welder to it....melted about 20 rods into the axle and made a TRUE locker

good times
good times

Take a good long look at the so-called Dana 70s under the Dodge trucks and compare them to a genuine Dana 60.

Not a lot of difference where it counts.

My opinion:

If you tear out a 60, you will tear out a 70.

Common sense will keep it in there a long time, providing it isn't on it's last legs when you put it in.

Never had any problems with my 60. Granted I'm not running 600hp, but the truck has done a LOT of pulling and some pretty heavy loads. I wouldn't worry about it. Drive it however you want.

Couldn't be any more truth to that statement. The 70 used is really a 70U, not the 70HD. The 70U has smaller pinion bearings than the regular 70, 32 spline axles instead of 35's.

I know for a fact that the dana 70 that was under my truck when i got it had 35 spline axleshafts. Maybe it wasn't the original? I wouldn't really agree with the statement that the 60 and 70 are pretty much the same either. On the 60 the housing is smaller, the axle tubes are smaller, the axle shafts are smaller, the carrier is smaller. I'm probably wrong, but I thought bigger was better.

Yes the carrier is smaller, ring and pinion are too.
I'd be willing to bet somewhere along the line your rear was switched or rebuilt with 35 spline axles. Maybe the earlier ones had 35 splines axles? I have a 1990 at the house now, I'll have to pull one to find out now. I know the 93 I just rebuilt had 32 spline ones in it and so did another one my buddy did(ate 3 teeth off the pinion). I thought I was rebuilding the original rear at 198,000 miles, but when I got in there I could see all kind of scarring on the case and cover like something came apart inside once before. The limited slip diff was shot, bearings needed to be replace, but at least the ring and pinion looked excellent.

I think as long as you stay off the pedal, the 60 should last. It is how much power is USED, and HOW it is used, that kills diffs, not the power being available.

All my 70s have had 35spline axles. The R&P, bearings, etc, have been the same. The wheel bearings are smaller on the 3/4tons, though.

My 80 has the same wheel bearings and seals as the 70 it replaced.
