Question voltage spike

Has anyone had a situation like this occur?

My voltage meter usually runs in the 2/3 level of the safe zone on the stock guage. Lately it has spiked up to the high end of the guage, where it stays for a few minutes, and then goes back down to normal. During this, my engine temp on the stock guage reads at nearly half way up, instead of 1/3, and my radio cuts out.

I replaced the voltage regulator and alternator about 6 months ago. This problem has been happening for about 1 month, and is getting more frequent.

I have also cleaned up all of the electrical connection that I could find as well. Has anyone got an idea of where to look to fix this. It can't be good for the battery to keep getting zapped like that. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd check the harness coming from the alternator over by the pasenger side frame rail and see if it has rubbed through. (dark green and dark blue on my 91.5)

From FSM

Excessive charging:
1) Grounded alternator field wire, feild terminal or connections
2) Alternator field grounded internally
3) voltage regulator sensing circuit open

I just posted about the same problem a few days ago. I went and got a new voltage regulator and haven't had a problem since.
All I can suggest is to check all the wires and grounds.

It never hurts to add a ground wire between the alternator and the regulator to make sure the grounding is there.

Thanks boys, since I put a new volt. reg. in a little while ago, I'll start with a ground and go from there. Appreciate the responses.

Ground wires are usually 90% of the problems from my experience. Good luck.
