Transmission gasket
Transmission gasket
Hey all,
In my neverending quest to stop all leaks, I decided to try a rubber gasket on my last tranny service. So far I've torqued the bolts at least 5 times. Every time I put couple 100 miles on the thing, I notice it's weeping a little. I put the torque wrench on the bolts and they appear loose again. Anyone use these gaskets? Is it just the rubber compressing, or are the bolts really loosing up? They don't appear to be loose fitting. Going to use locktight on them tomorrow

What kit did you use? I have used the ones for the A518's, on my old 727's, and they came with a cork gasket covered in a rubber compound. Sealed up fine. One additional torque and all was good.
Used the floppy rubber one from Napa for the A518. One of the kits came with cork, but I've had bad experience with those in the past. Decided to try the floppy rubber (not dodge OEM one). Seems weird that ALL the bolts are loose. It must be the gasket compressing. Just wondering if anyone else has this issue with these gaskets
Did you check the pan to see if the bolt holes were dimpled in?
Rubber gasket should hold torque for a reasonable amount of time. I'd put an external tooth star washer under each bolt rather than lock-tite. I don't know what torque you're applying, but the proper amount is way less than what the bolt and thread would call for. Too much torque will make it leak by distorting the pan.

What I have done was used black RTV along with the gasket. Smear some along the tranny housing and the pan and make the gasket sandwich between. Just tighten enough to hold together, let cure for 12-24 hours, then tighten to specs and fill 'er up. This also acts as an adhesive, and the gasket is easy to remove for the next time.
Get the reusable factory one, can't remember the part number right now, but they work great.
They used to be stupid expensive, but the last time I checked, they had dropped to under 15 bucks.
Rubber over a steel core, and plastic standoffs to keep from crushing.

Thanks guys. I knew I should have chosen the OEM one, but was in a rush for time and thought the rubber wouldn't leak. Next 10k service I guess. taterfarm thanks for the updated torque specs. Good to reconfirm I'm not over-torquing.
