Timing cover

I am doing some work on my truck, replacing the radiator, water pump,t-stat. I`m also going to replace a leaky front seal while I have the rad out. My Q is, how much extra work will it be to pull the timing cover seeing as I will have alot of stuff apart already, and if I do remove the cover, do i need a specific gasket or could I use a form in place gasket (RTV, Great Stuff etc). The KDP has been jigged (thanx Dave!) but I figured I could ck the rest of the front cover bolts and I could actually replace the seal with the cover on the bench, as I hear they can be a bear to get back in.

With all the stuff you're taking out, all you have to do is pull the fan hub and the timing cover. If I was going that far in, I'd pull the cover too. Cummins sells a gasket, I'd use that instead of RTV.

My gasket proved to be good enough to reuse. It's made of rubber for the most part, just clean it up, and put it back together.

Cool, thanx . I wound up taking the cover off, just waiting on a gasket. Should i bother tabbing the KDP seeing as how it has been jigged? Kinda redundant? I was easy to get off, the best !9.00 I ever spent was for one of these http://www.ebigchina.com/ebcps/4/pd/858436.html it`s a 20 inch el-cheepo chain wrench. I picked mine up from some guy that stopped in at my job, had a van FULL of cheap tools (no it was`nt hot, all brand new stuff)....that thing is worth it`s weight in gold!

The set screw will hold the KDP in. If you want you can do the Cummins fix and peen the case over the edge of the dowel pin with a punch and a hammer.
