I want to set the valves and can't move the timeing pin to locate tdc. Is there a trick to getting this thing to move?

Mine was a buger to get loose but it finally went by the luck of the hand,wiggling and twisting at it. Be gentle if you use tools, its pretty small in diameter in the one section but about 1/2 in diameter through the housing. Mine did not go in much at all until you hit the detent for TDC. you could try a little penetrating lube and let her sit a while. It has a O ring on it to hold it I suppose. After I got them set it seemed the pin was to loose to stay put, but Ive had no problems. Somewhere back in this section another gent had the same problem and did his adjustment by watching #1 and #6 rockers, I dont remember the particulars but you probably can find it.

Yeah thanks. That's pretty much what I did. I turned the crank until the rockers on #1 were loose and adjusted the proper intake and exhaust of that setting. Then I rotated the crank 360* and did the rest. Easier with the pin but not a problem the way I did it. I put pb blaster on it for a couple of days with no luck. That sucker is stuck.

There is a snap ring that holds the timing pin in place. Just pop it out and pull the timing pin out. Clean it up real good and put a little grease or oil on it. That should fix it right up.

 

Monty, I did mine a while back and dont recall but on the timing pin on mine I recall a rubber O ring. Curious is it a metal snap ring?? or did I loose something??

Well, you have a small metal snap ring (this is on the backside of the timing pin and is on the outside of the engine) that keeps the timing pin from backing out. It fits right on the timing pin and locks it into place in the housing. Once the timing pin is out. You will see a rubber o-ring. But, you cant pull the timing pin out all the way until you have removed the small snap ring. I usually just use a small flathead screwdriver.
