Question Temperature Sender Location

I have been pondering the wisdom of installing the mechanical temperature-sender straight up behind the thermostat, like where I put mine.

To even get the gauge to register, I had to bleed off the air twice.

My puny brain got to puzzling on this and, if a little air-pocket is all it takes to give in-correct gauge readings, and this location is about as high on the engine as can be; so, considering these facts, should something develop a coolant leak, and the coolant level drop below the temperature probe, the engine could very well over-heat, and the gauge never have a clue.

Am I thinking right??

When I install the wife's new mechanical temperature gauge, I think I will look for an access port lower in the water-jacket, where it will be more likely to remain submerged.

What are you guys thoughts on this??

Thanks.

Way in the back of the head on the drivers side

I put my mechanical temp gauge in a connection on the top left (drivers side) of the head way in the back. Just barely clears the windshield wiper motor.
Reads anywhere from 160 to 180 degrees F when its warmed up, Bearkiller.
