Surging Idle
Surging Idle
Im having a promblem with my engine idle. when in gear its not as bad, but when its out of gear it idles in a surging type manner. give it some pedal and it smooths out. Another problem is if u rev the engine and let of the pedal to fast it dies. it just started having this problem two days ago. any help would be much appreciated.
The idle surging sounds like it might be too low of idle. And actually come to think of it now a low idle could also make it stall when you rev it up and let off the throttle quick. So bring up your idle and see how she does then
That's what a mechanic called it. I had the same problem. He suggested that I try a fuel additive first as a "palliative measure" before trying anything else. I did that and the motor smoothed right out after a few miles. If you're current on your fuel filter maintenence, that should be fine. If not, I'd suggest changing that too. Good luck!! Chuck
Ok, maybe this could be the problem. The water in fuel light just came on. Drained the water from the filter and the light went off. Not even 4 miles later light came back on...So could a bad take of fuel be the problem?
The truck has just had a service and the filter was just changed less than 200mi ago.the idle seems to be just abit higher than most. The stalling problem just got alot worst. now when im stopping for the traffic light it really wants to stall. but if i let off the pedal easy its just fine.
Thanks for the input.

Sounds like you may have a bad tank of fuel there....is the tank full? Hopefully not and then you could go somewhere to top off and dilute what bad fuel's in there.
Try the fuel additive first (if it's a real bad dose of WIF/bad fuel then you may have to increase the dosage of the fuel additive you're using. Usually that's safe but check directions) and if it doesn't do the trick then change the filter. (now you know why some of the old timers who traveled a lot always kept a spare fuel filter or 2. They never knew how good the fuel was or wasn't on the road. Nowadays it's rarer to hear of bad fuel but it still happens....It wasn't that long ago that there was an article in the Tacoma paper about bad diesel costing some station/oil company big bucks for customer vehicle repairs.) My WIF light also came on recently for the first time in over a quarter million miles. I found that to be a wire that had broke on that WIF sensor off the end of the fuel filter. New WIF sensor...viola!! All fixed! I hope you're as fortunate and don't have to drain the tank. Chuck

Well one problem followed by another. Now the fuel shutoff quit working and now the engine is surging worse than ever. And i was wondering if this could have been the problem all along.Does anyone know if an upgraded solenoid is available? Where i might find one? Im new to the Cummins world and lovin every minute of it. Thanks guys for the help
