Starting problem...again

All day today, chasing parts in town, my truck was a little slow to start. Thought it was just my truck and the heat not getting along, since the idle often dislikes the heat. But got to walmart, and thought it would never start.

Its real slow cranking. Turned over 4 really slow times before finally cranking. Went to autozone to get battery tested just to be sure. No prob there. any idea whats wrong? Im thinking but really dreading starter.

Check all your cable connections,at the batt and the starter, be sure they are tight and clean.

If still slow it's most likely the starter....

All cables were tight-battery connections and ground to frame were all good... If it is the case, is the starter the same from auto to manual. i am doing this conversion, which is now set back til i can figure this out.

Do a voltage drop test on the cables. They can get corroded internally.

Starter is the same stick or auto - but look in the sticky for info on rebuilding your own. If you can do a trans swap, you can rebuild the starter.

It has gone from okay to bad to worse to all in a matter of 2 days. Went out to move it and took 3 horrible sounding crankings to fire. It is the first time in the 4 years Ive owned it that it has let me down, other than front end work...very aggravating .

Where can I get a starter rebuid kit?

If the core price isn't much, <$25, not likley LOL, I'd keep your old starter. Then later, you can open it up, learn a thing or two, then put some new parts in it. Most likely it's your brushes that are worn. If it lets you down and won't start, get under the truck and beat the front of the starter with a hammer. That will jar some of the brush residue off and allow you to get a good connection and start. This will only work so many times though. I went a month like this on one truck. This last one, it only worked once.

Unfortunately its a $59 charge I need, as I need a higher boost gauge for my turbo swap. And boost gauge....$59. Well see though. Thanks for the advice, I just gotta pray it starts once to get me to the dodge house for my gaskets then to the ranch. Oh man-Im gonna have to drive the old man's duramax tonight .

I got the replacement brushes from Carquest for mine about 5 years ago. If you are going to pull the starter to put in a new one, then you are only about a half hour to an hour longer by rebuilding the one you have. It doesn't take long, and it's real easy to do. And it will save you a whole lot of cash.

Is it as easy as it looks? My dad and my brother, the 2 mechanics that guide me, will both be out of town for the job. I found a starter at oreillys with LLW for 130, core charge 35. Thats 2 starters for 165+brushes if i can find them
