Starter Trouble?
Starter Trouble?
All,
My 93 W250 with A518 auto is having starter trouble. A year ago; I replaced the brushes with Larry B's kit. The starter worked well for about a year. Now with the drop in temp's here in northern IL, the starter is acting up.
The starter will crank, but not fast enough to fire the engine. The battery is an Optima Red Top, which is 4 years old, but has always been on a trickle charger, and is holding it's charge. With a little over 200,000 miles on the odometer, I suspect the starter is finally going? If I tap it with a rubber mallet, sometimes that helps, and the truck will start. What's my best option for a rebuilt starter - NAPA, Advanced Auto etc? Or; is a new starter advised? Thanks in advance!

I have done a lot of electrical mods and have 3 Optima Yellow Tops and my starter started dragging, I cleaned all the battery connections and it starts just fine now, while Optimas don't show the white flaky corrosion of a normal battery the connections can still get dirty. Give that a try.

MrExtreme and Mark,
Thanks for the info! I will try cleaning the connections and see if that helps. That could be the problem; as when the temps were warmer here in IL, the starter had no problems. It could be with corrosion on the battery cables, combined with the grid heaters kicking in (with the colder weather), that the combined effect is causing starter drag? Mark, I will see if any place here around Chicago offers rebuilding of the starter.

X2 what Mark said. I have had very good luck getting starters and alternators rebuilt at the local shops. They are listed under "Automobile Electrical Service" in our yellow pages.
