soundproofing...

i will post some pictures soon, but my truck has gotten A LOT quieter. i had the entire outside and inside rhino lined. I also put new weather stripping on the doors(and put plastic back in behind the panels). now the problem is that i can hear a lot of road noise from the shifter and transfer case shifter. for the getrag shifter, since there are actually 2 layers i figuered i could stuff some insullation in there or something but i am at a loss as far as the transfer case shifter. i'd love to hear some thoughts or opinions on the subject! thanks, mark

I beleive it was either Redleg or Wanna described how to put a piece of hose over the linkage between the shifter and T-case... makes it MUCH quieter....
Search for a past thread on it, I know it was discussed.

I used ruberized undercoating on most of the t-case linkage parts that I could reach. Then I wrapped a rag loosely around the shifter handle between the body and the boot. That made a big difference. I would like to try the spray in bedliner on my interior. I already have some dynamat on a few areas, but could use a lot more of something.

Would the spray in liner be more affective than the roll roofing method

hey, that makes a lot of sence with the t-case shifter, if you just grab it and put a little pressure it quiets right down.

i looked at the store bought spray in and i don't think that would be very effective at all. so far i am very please with how the rhino has quieted things down, you can see some pics of it in my "paint" job thread.

Last fall, I was cleaning my truck out , had the seat removed and teh flooring up and noticed some surface rust starting.
I had some left over DUPLO truck bed lining from another project, and on a whim painted(brushed) it over the floor pans. It hasd made a slight diff in teh interior noise, I am thinking that this summer I may pull the dash and do teh firewall........

I had a similar problem and went to the junkyard and got another t-case boot. I sandwiched the two boots together one upside down sticking out the bottom of the cab and the other in the regular position, you have to trim the upside down one because the opening isn't big enough to fit around the bottom of the linkage. I also sandwiched two strips of insulation between the boots on each side of the shifter. You have to make sure the insulation doesn't interfere with the shifter. It worked really good and cut out most of the outside noise. The problem now is the noise that is carried up the shifter linkage. I'm going to try some of the suggestions above, and my dad suggested drilling out the various ends of the linkage a little oversize so a nylon bushing will fit in the joints, then use nylon bushings and washers so there is no metal to metal noise transfers, it also looks like the brass bushing where the shifter mounts to the side of the tranny could be replaced with nylon. If that doesn't work I'm going to isolate the shifter with rubber like the gear shifter is, or just get another gear shifter and cut it down for the t-case. goodluck with whatever you try and let us know how it works
