Shifter thread size
There are two completely different kinds of shifters on the 1st Gen. Getrags, and different styles among the two different kinds.
Year model and cab package seems not to have any bearing on what you get.
One kind simply threads onto a threaded stub that sticks up from the shifter-tower; those threads ARE METRIC; I have it written somewhere, as I bought a bunch of metric nuts and welded them into one long "coupler-nut", thus giving me a base to build my custom shifter on.
The other kind is "slabbed" together, with the two "slabs" held together by two smallish metric bolts/washers/nuts.
I see a lot of both kinds snapped off from the tower, usually caused by kids trying to show out, slamming the shifter into the gears; slow and easy is the ticket.
I have also seen equally as many attempts to weld this mess back together, many not very pretty.
Which kind of shifter do you have ??
I have the threaded stub type... Im asking bcs the rubber bushing in mine was all rotted out and sloppy so i just welded it up solid. Which worked great, however u get all the noise from the tranny and driveline vibrations up through the shifter. Its getting annoying, especially under load.
And you say its a Metric thread? Probably a M16 or 18 hey? I figured it would've been around 5/8"

My home-made shifter is steel all the way to the custom handle, and I get no vibrations or noise at all.
The "slabbed together" shifters have no shock-absorption either and none of the ones I have with that system have any noise either.
You may have some transmission issues causing the noise.

possibly, i did it when i replaced the clutch. i think the throwout bearing might be loose or binding. although other then a non-progessing noise no problems to report over the 75k km's on the new parts
Check all of your u-joints, even the front, and the nuts that hold the yolks to the diffs, and the t-case! If you can move 'em, pull 'em apart and put red lock-tight on 'em, and put 'em back together. you will need a very very big wrench wedged under your truck as you let your jack down if you want to get them off afterwards.
