Shift Kits

I just had my transmission service by a reputable company that I've delt with for 25 years and I inquired about a shift kit for my truck and they advised against it. I have 122K miles on her, very easy miles, not much towing, nothing over 4K lbs.

They told me that shift kits, although they install them, cause more problems than they fix with higher mileage vehicles. I'm going to order a Hughes TC and they recommend a valve body and I'm not sure about that now. TC yes, VB? shift kit? any suggestions?

im going out on a limb here but hopefully someone will correct me...

to gain full effect of an aftermarket TC, the VB should be changed as the stock pressures are not high enough. in order to properly insure that your trans holds that pressure, the seals should be thoroughly pressure tested. im sure older vehicles have more problems because the seals cannot accept the higher pressure the VB puts through them.

those are my thoughts, but i have NO tranny experience. im sure there is some more to it.

Why would I need higher pressures for a tighter converter to work? Just trying to understand these automatics My understanding is that the "vanes" and the angle control how much fluid is pumped through the stator against the turbine side of the converter?
