school me on the 4x4 shifter
school me on the 4x4 shifter
Any tips on a first timer 1st gen 4x4 owner on shifting? I hope I didn't screw anything up when the shifter popped out of N while I was going about 25 mph. Grind city!
Is there a procedure that all of you 4x4 dudes use other than what is described in the driver's side visor? How do I remember the steps, and how do I prevent disaster?

I have found that when I accidentally find nuetral in the T/C I have to shut down completely to prevent grinding up the tranny park pawl or the gears in the transfer case. When shifting from 2wd to 4 high on the fly, do it in one quick continuous motion to minimize gear grinding. It takes practice to go from 4wd to 2wd on the fly to keep from over shooting into nuetral. Also those all gear transfer cases get into a bind sometimes when you are trying to come out of 4wd. You may find it easier to shift out while still in the dirt or snow before going onto the blacktop. If that isn't possible rock the truck gently back and forth to release the bind in the drive train. DO not attempt to shift into or out of 4wd low while moving or in gear. I haven't broke anything yet but it sure jolts your fillings loose if you do.
Teh NV series of TC's is famous for snapping and throwing the chain drive. Its best to be at a complete stop, reverse few feet to release teh binding on teh TC and then shift. IF you are shifting on teh fly, let off the throttle, be certain teh clutch is ALL the way depressed and shift quickly and smoothly.
Not having any slippage under teh tires can bind teh TC and cause a real hard shift and grinding. If you over shoot into nuetral, go through the whole process again to go back into a drive gear.
If you can, its also a good practise to reverse direction for a few feet after shift in/out of 4X to relesae teh drive shaft pressure if you can.

To shift don't shift while under power give a little go pedal then let off all the while pushing on the lever and it will go to 2wd easily. If you can't stop and back up to releve the pressure on the gears. Or unlock the hubs then it will go back to 2wd easily, but still may take backing up. If it goes to neutral its no biggie cause its easier to get it to 2wd from neutral than it is from 4wd. Just takes practice!!
OOPs..ok my bad....... learn something everytime I come on here...
If your going to do a shift on the fly! Make shore your hubs are lock in or it will grind a lot.......and of course with the hubs unlocked you still will not have 4 wd
It was quite embarrassing when i couldn't pull a blazer out of a ditch last year cause i was in 2 will drive, low...forgot to lock the hubs in
