It may be because the KSB is activated when the engine is cold. It advances the pump timing until a certain temp is reached. I can hear the difference in my truck and I can hear when he KSB shuts off. The engine has a different sound to it.

Mine is quicker when the KSB is on. I have my fuel turned up, but I never touched my timing at all..not yet

I agree that they are loud when the KSB switch is working!
I just within the past week or so replaced mine. It helped a little when she is cold in the morning. The sound is like a rattle when you bump the fuel and bring it off of an idle.
Do you make a lot of greyish white smoke when it is at an idle warming up?

Mine does and i'm in a warm climate. Hazes a bit at start up and it's definately fuel. Give it a bit of pedel in nuetral and it will get a little heavier...no smoke cloud though.

Den,
If it is like this when it is warming up, then I would say that it is the KSB switch. Check the yellow wire on the injection pump when it is cold out. You should have a few volts if it is properly working. If not, check the wire coming out of the fuel solinoid for power. If you got power coming out of the fuel solinoid, and none coming out of the KSB sensor, then you may need a new one.
