Radiator Flush

I am going to have my thermostat changed tomorrow in my friends shop. Would you all go ahead and have the radiator flushed out? He has the machine there to do it properly. I am leaning towards going ahead and doing it. I am sure there is a bunch of crap in there after 200,000 miles.

Also would you all fill it back with a good quality antirfreeze/water mix or spend the extra bucks on the Shell Rotella pre-mix?

Bill

Here is what i found out about Prestone Anti-Freeze.

Thank you for your inquiry and your interest in our products. The Prestone Antifreeze Coolant in the Yellow Jug
AF-777. Is not a Low Silicate Antifreeze. Yes, ideally a Low Silicate Heavy Duty formula is best for such Diesel
Applications. We do however make, Prestone Heavy Duty Antifreeze Coolant. This is a blend of ethylene glycol and
specially formulated inhibitor package designed for heavy-Duty applications. The product is designed to eliminate the
need for an initial charge of supplemental coolant additives on new vehicles and recharged systems. Can be used in all
heavy duty vehicle applications. We hope this has been helpful.
And here's what I posted in the other antifreeze thread.

Just visit your local Cummins outlet and get the Fleetguard 50/50 mix.

No questions.
No mixing.
No guessing.
Just the recommended coolant for our engines.

I'm sure it's a bit more expensive than off the shelf antifreeze, but why take chances.

phox

Re:Radiator Flush

Good idea on the flush for the radiator, but beware if you flush the block with that chemical there is a good chance you'll loose your water pump seals in a short ammount of time. Fleetguards stuff you know is good, it must be it's Cummins .

Re:Radiator Flush

How well do you know the history of your truck? If you do a flush, you could free up an old leak he plugged. If your not sure about the past, you may want to be sure you have funds available to replace parts in case of emergency.

Re:Radiator Flush

It was done yesterday. I got it flushed and a new T-stat. I about fell over when I saw what came out. We used a flush/fill machine so no air got in the sytem and it does a real good job of getting all the old crud out. I feel better knowing it has a nice new 50/50 mix in it. Bill
