Pyro install for a friend. NPT?
Pyro install for a friend. NPT?
I was going to install my own pyro on my truck then I just decided to take it somewhere so I didn't mess it up. So I don't know how this works.
My friend wants to come to my place and we are going to install the pyro on his 92 dodge except we both have a dumb dumb question.
The pyro is an 1/8 NPT
Is there a special tap for NPT(I'm guessing so)? Or do you just use a regular tap?
And when we drill it out do we use a 1/8 inch drill bit then use the 1/8 inch tap?
Humor me before we screw up his manifold.
Anything special we should know? Thanks

It will say 1/8" NPT right on the tap. Its tapered pipe thread, so be careful not to tap too deep. Read the directions that come w/ the guage, the probe usually has to be positioned a certain way. Do a quick search or look in the stickys, there are a few great threads on this with pictures, dimensions, and suggestions on how to keep shavings out of your turbo.
You need a tap for pipe threads--it'll say 1/8'' NPT right on it. They're pretty common and easy to get a hold of individually. I 'think' the bit size is 21/64ths, maybe a quick internet search is in order. Use a ***** punch to get the bit started. 1/4'' rear of center should allow you to miss the divider in the manifold. If the turbo is staying on, grease the drill bit and clean the shavings frequently as you proceed. Cast iron is very VERY soft. Drill slowly. Once you're through, run a magnet around in the manifold to get any loose shavings. Grease the tap. Run it down a few times then try threading the adapter for the probe in. You'll want it to grab 2 or 3 threads before it begins to tighten up. If you run the tap too deep the first time, the adapter may bottom out before it begins to bind. When you're happy with how the adapter threads in, clean the inside of the manifold with a magnet 1 more time. Now you can snug down the adapter and slide the probe in. It took longer to type this than it will to do the install
