Pyro acting up.......How to test?

My pyro is bouncing all over the place.
This is a mechanical guage from Banks. How do I test to find out if it's the thermolecoupler(sp?), lead wire or the guage?

Any of the bouncing related to bumps in the road?

Not sure how the innards of the gauge is built...but a Pyrometer is basically a very sensitive volt meter. The thermocouple generates a voltage based on temperature different by using two different materials. So it's either a connection, or the movement (like a watch's movement) in the gauge is caphlooey.

Here's what I'd do...

Try and reproduce the bouncing of the gauge by bending the wires, jiggling the wires, pulling, etc. You can check the voltage, without the gauge, at the wire ends with a voltmeter. Based on this chart, the voltage should be around 12 or 13 mV (that's millivolts, so .013 volts) at 600* EGT. This is sort-of-normal cruising speed. If this voltage is steady, then I think you've got a gauge problem.

Check for good ground between the engine block and body.

Swap out the entire gauge or just the thermocouple?

I'll do some testing tomorrow.
