This sound is definately not a barking sound, it sounds very much like releasing the pressure valve on an air tank.

Correct. Turbo bark is kind of like a series of little chirping sounds, not just one "release of air" You hear it because of the straight pipe.

A compressor housing with a MWE slot will help prevent turbo bark. But yes, a blow off valve will prevent turbo bark.

I think Blow off Valves are mainly for Gassers with a Throttle Valve/Butterfly valve... Makes for a much more violent bark... so a blow off is needed to keep those little gasser snails alive... If you want to hear a bark, listen to the pulling videos from those trucks with big sticks and big singles, (and stoopid pumps) it is a REAL bark... And THAT is the sound you want to avoid. But yes from stock, even mild increases will change the sound of your turbo when you release the skinny pedal quickly, and up until you start doing it @ 40+ psi I don't think it is that bad... 10PSI not bad at all...

Basically the compressor is being driven hard by the turbine wheel when you got the engine fueled but when you pull the fuel back to idle, the turbine loses drive power to the compressor and then the boost you built just comes out the front and the turbo slows very fast.. However, it isn't a 'surge' like you'd see when you have the engine lugged and fueled hard without an MWE either.

Confused yet?

My old 89 I had with a stock baby H1C would screech when going from WOT to idle. I have heard a few other trucks do the same sound. The new owner of the truck thought it was real cool to do that all the time. It is not busted yet. It does not fuel hard enough for it to actually bark. I have never had my 60 GDS upgrade bark on my 93. My 89 with the S300 will give 1 bark.

That is Turbo Flutter or Compressor Surge/Stall, it is hard on the turbo shaft/bearings. A MWE slot is usually the cure in your case you described.

What is happening is the turbo is trying to spool, but the compressed air from the compressor side of the turbo has no place to go, so it overcomes the turbo and makes it "stall" untill it can begin to move again.

My truck did this. The GDS 60mm cured it.

that's a scary sound! not to mention the potential damage that can occur to the engine by the uneducated drivers that think it sounds cool and have no idea.

in my undieseleducated days I would go to the pulls and thought that was pretty cool, but just not soo much now. That is unless I have money and can afford a new, better turbo......

Yes, that is VERY hard on the shaft in the turbo, what usually happens to the turbo when you bark it like that is the shaft the blades are attached to snaps off. That is why the HX40 has such a bad rap unless it is like a piers modified 40, the wheels attached to both ends are just a little to big for the shaft to handle. Throw it on a 6BT, and ad a wing nut behind the wheel.... well you get the point.
