Parts justification questions.

I am selling a couple cars and putting the money into my truck over the next couple of months. I am on a tight budget and I want some opinions. My current setup is as follows: new era 435 injectors, hx35/16 turbo, piston lp, timing at head soon to be bumped a tooth along with the 3200 gov spring. I tow 5000 pounds on a 3-4 times a year basis. I need some help weighing my options. Currently, I can get a banks upgraded hx40 for 200 or throw the 7 blade hx40 compressor on my hx35 for 200 including rebuild at local turbo shop. I also need a clutch. Can I still tow to some extent with a ceramic? I have heard they are on-or-off grabby, but I'm only towing a dunebuggy and some dirtbikes, so I'm not to worried about a bumpy ride. What kind of horsepower can I support with the hx40 or 35/40 hybrid? I like the fact that with the hybrid, I wouldn't need to change my downpipe...on the other hand, a wastegate would ease my mind since I see over 40 psi when my pump is turned up. Is there a difference in spoolup between the 35/40 hybrid and the 40? Also, does anyone have any input on the 62/65/12 d-tech turbos, I don't know if a 12cm housing would be good enough, I had one on for a while and it felt like it was choking my motor on the top end, maybe the larger wastegate on the d-tech helps? I do a good portion of freeway driving. I am looking for 400 horsepower to the wheels when tuned up, most of the time, I drive with the truck only moderately tuned. I would say I want my truck to be daily driven with 375 horsepower. Thanks for your thoughts.

I would recommend DDP injectors, if you could fit them in your budget. They build a very nice, extrude-honed injector and they run clean! SMKHZRD ran the New Era 435s in the 1st gen he had and said they were dirty pigs. Plus, when he dyno'd, he was in the low to mid 200hp range with a cranked pump and an s362. He was very unhappy. He bought a set of 70lpm DDPs and dyno'd again... made at least 400hp that I can remember. The 435s definitely held him back.

The hybrid with the super 40 7-blade wheel should be just fine for 400hp. I'd upgrade the hx-35 myself. Even though your hx-35 doesn't have a WG, you could save up and get a wastegated housing for it. Supposedly, the hx-35 and super 40's utilize the same shaft. The standard hx-40's shaft narrows through the center section for some reason which is why a lot of them would break when barking. But every here says the VE doesn't fuel enough to do so but it's still a possibility if you're on it really hard and back out immediately to no throttle.

As for a clutch, I don't know if ceramics are recommended for towing. You'd probably be just fine with a Con O or Con OFE from Southbend. The Con OFE can support 475hp and it's very smooth for me.

Long time, no hear Bogurt! Hope all is well!

If you buy a DDP injector, I would now suggest the 55 lpm injectors and stay away from the custom "Competition Series" injectors they now build.

If anyone buys a 62/65 turbo I would always use a 14 turbine housing.

To help out spoolup and reduce smoke and egt's and you are feeling ambitious, I have been reading good things about the Hamilton 181/210 cam; though maybe not so cheap.

Is your grid heater removed? This could help a tiny bit too if not needed.

I would keep my eyes peeled for a good ATS or PDI 12 valve exhuast manifold. Sometimes you can pick them up at a good price.

A well built injector cannot be emphasized enough when trying to make cool, clean and lots of power.

For the injectors, I was considering the new 7x.010's. I know there have been some problems in 2nd gens, but I would think that the lower pressures of the ve pump would allow those injectors to last longer. Hopefully some other 1st genners can install them so I can learn from their mistakes. I'm holding off on the turbo for now since I have my hx40 and a compressor wheel on the way. A new clutch is now my first order of business since it wont hold in the higher gears with my pump turned up. I'm thinking a ceramic puck clutch because of the price aspect.

I ended up borrowing 2 turbo's from a buddy and bought the one I liked. This may surprise everyone but I ended up going with a 57/65/14 super b. I tried a 62/65/14 also. The bigger turbo had more of a kick in the pants top end, but I love the drive ability of the super b. Spools instantly and clears up almost everything in valet mode and doesn't even haze at all under partial throttle. Egt's are a little higher than the hx40 but not excessive and I'm not worried since I have water injection. I also chose the super b since I have twins planned in the future. I am very pleased with the turbo. Only question I had is on the fueling side of things. My pump is right at runaway( shifting at 2800, the rpm doesn't drop until I drop the clutch in the next gear) and I am only seeing 38 lbs of boost with wastegate disconnected. Pump is advanced to head, ksb engaged. I usually don't run my pump anywhere close to this on the fuel screw. I'm not complaining about power, but I was under the impression that I would be in the 43ish range on boost with my fueling. Could my timing be too far advanced? I never ran my pump like this with my other turbo's and was also wondering if there are any reliability drawbacks on the pump to having it more tuned up. I was also thinking....should I run larger fuel lines? Besides my lp piston lift pump, my fueling system is stock. My power drops significantly past 2200 rpm in 4th and 5th. @ notes on turbo install: adjust wastegate BEFORE installing turbo, and double check wastegate actuator clearance on oil draintube. My actuator was touching the drain tube.

I have DDP's in mine, stage 4? It's the highest street / towing recomended injector. All the stuff I got from DDP I went down to their shop and picked up when I lived in NW WA, Real nice people was a pleasure to do business with them. I'm really happy with their products.
