I am in the market for a dodge diesel. I was looking for a 94-98.5, but came across a 92 4x4 extended cab locally.

100k miles, very clean in and out, no dents (some small scratches and chips), Automatic seems to shift fine. Power everything, AC, Cruise, tires @ 40%, Overall very nice.

They are asking $8,900. In my area diesels go for more than KBB says thier worth. (I work at a Chrystler dealorship, and see 98 -02 selling for 14-20K). Is this price a good price, or are they asking too much?

Seems a little high for an auto but dont know cant see the truck. Single cab, ext cab? Paint color and in good shape with all the clear? First thought is its kinda high but hard truck to find!

It is an extended cab. red/ white two tone. paint is good no pealing, except the pinstriping between the two colors

 

Sounds like a 7500 dollar truck at its best but I dont know were you are and the further north you get the higher the trucks bring. Just trying to give ya a honest bid on it.

 

ok, thats what I figured. I live in Medford, OR. early 90's dodge cummins are hard to find around here (at least I havn't seen vary many f/s).

You bet down here that truck would be bidded from a dealer or used guys at 35 to 5500 and thats all of it.

 

i live 3 hours south(i think) and unless that truck is a 4x4, it is way over priced. They are still hard to find, but 1 owner, 4x4s are around. Not to many extended cabs, but they are out there. Check the craigslist for northern california towns, or offer 5,000 bucks, because that is still a 15 year old,2wd, auto.

 

for a rustfree and clean truck like that I think between 6-8k. 8900 sounds a little high for an auto but in the right market it will sell for that.

 

Yes that is way way way to high for a 92, I would offer him 5500, Blue book on that truck isn't any higher than 6500 and that would be if the truck was in absolutely perfect condition. IMHO coming from the car business (sales and service) a 15-16 year old vehicle is considered very old nowadays, and unless you plan on paying it all in cash you will never get financing on a vehicle of that age, and then you need to take into account all the possible repairs on a vehicle of that age. If that truck is the route you decide to take make sure you get him to let you take it to a reputable dealership or garage in that area and have them look it over meticulously and give you a write out with price quotes on ALL repairs that need to be done if you plan on spending nearly 9k on a truck that old.

 

It's hard to put a value on a vehicle that is so far away. In Virigina there seems to be a bit of a premium to be paid on low mileage lightly used trucks. I paid 10k for mine and it was bone stock two years ago. Over here, I would say that $8900 for that truck in good shape would be reasonable if everything worked and no major body or mechanical issues. Make a counter offer and see what he will take. Show him the NADA value. Good luck!

 

I would not take less than 8900 for mine and this one sounds like it is in as good of shape.

 

Just sold a crewcab to a guy up in Oregon for lot more then what he's asking and he was happy to even fly down and drive it back from Ca so thats a good price .

 

That would be a fair price around here.. and look on Ebay, you'll see them selling for more than that regularly...

 

No vehicle new, used or salvage is worth any more or less than a prospective buyer is willing to pay for it. Blanket guidelines like age, financing and "potential" repairs are just selling tactics used by unscrupulous salesmen. So called "inspections" by garages or mechanics are also famous for missing serious problems, or misdiagnosing things they do find, especially in diesels.

 

I paid $8700 for mine (4X4, single cab, crapomatic, 102K at the time) going on three years ago. I felt that it was not a bad deal considering that newer much higher mileage Dodges were more expensive. I knowingly payed a little more than book but, considering that everyone from whom I sought advice as well as myself thought that it was a fair price, I bought it. Who ever said that book value is always accurate anyway?!?!?! The tranny is worthless crap (my own fault for buying an auto!) and the paint is peeling, but I still feel that, with the mods that I have done, it is worth at least that much.

If you like the pickup, and realize that these transmissions are not suitable for towing anything larger than an empty snowmobile trailer, I see no reason not to pay that much for a low-mileage 4X4. Sounds like a pretty good pickup to me. Good Luck!
