overcharging battery

I have a quick question, my alternator has been overcharging the battery which eventually kills it. I am on my second battery and my volt meter still reads between 14,16 volts. I have replaced the external regulator and grounded it. what am i missing? This is on my 79 dump I repowered with an early 91 drive train. I use this truck to plow snow so I know that can be hard on a battery too. Any ideas would be appreciated. thanks
Evan

Many of the older voltage regulators [ one with metal cover that could screw off ] had points , were adjustable .
What kind of alt. is it ? , How many amps ?

Is that the voltmeter in the dash or are you taking a reading at the battery? I'm not too convinced the factory ones are that accurate.

Also the voltmeter in my dash seems to read a lot higher when it is really cold out, say 10 or colder. I've never checked it at battery when it does this but it hasn't caused me any trouble.
