I assume that you are refering to an oiled air filter.(like K&N)

I run one. There is some debate on wether or not they are good in a turbo aplication or not. A quick search will provide plenty of reading on the subject.

The short version is that oponants of the oiled filters say that the holes in the media are too big and let dirt through and over oiling can coat the inside intake and attract more dirt.

I've never had a problem running one but excessive dust is not a problem up here. Dust at -40*F is rare.

well think of it this way the oil from your air filter is being sucked into your turbo Thats Not Good for the turbo or Motor atleast this is my oppinion

The worst problem is the oil coats the unside surface of the intercooler which kills the heat transfer properties. The original owner of my truck ran a K&N and the intercooler was coated. The impellers were severly stained also, at least until the shaft broke!

I also run a K&N with no problems so far. Over oiling the filter will allow excess oil to coat turbo wheel and intake hoses. They actually say the the first coating of dirt on the filter help the filtering process since the "holes" in the filter are fairly big the dirt that sticks to the oil helps filter down to a finer micron. Plus if it does anything to my turbo it gives me a reason to replace it with a HX35.

THe K&N didn't ruin my turbo, lifting too quickly at 35PSI did that!

I keep the tied-off leg of an old nylon stocking stretched over the pleated filter in my Shop-Vac and it works wonders in keeping the larger debris from getting into the pleats.

It should work fine on an engine air-filter, also; but, the open-ness of the weave is such that it will only stop big stuff like bugs.

One of the foam pre-filters will actually work much better.

I don't know how big the BHAFs tend to be as I haven't done this yet, but my shop vac has a foam pre filter. Could that be used?

Actually, I would not run a oiled filter such as K&N on a machine that has components as a turbo or intercooler. It does not matter how well you reduce the oil, it will eventually work it's way into places you do not want it. So unless you have a preventive maintenance that cleans those areas, I think you are at risk - but hey, I keep my vehicles for decades.

On the filter sock, it would be best to have a material that obstructs the big items like bugs, rocks or larger dust. It would be best to choose a material that as soon as the air flow stops, that the captured material drops out of the filter sock - again preventive maintenance if frequently knocking the dirt off the filter sock does help the filter life to last longer.

Now with this said, I do run a standard filter that is changed regularly. When I get some time I will do the stock pot BHAF conversion.

i have run a k and n on my car crown vic police package for a while and it is the biggest no no to all of the crown vic enthusiasts out there. i haven't had any problems with oil goin onto the MAF where supposidly they say it goes. i have lubed that thing up better than ron jeremy and still had no problems. The turbo has sucked in a little water due to my other set up i had but its minor. im really not concerned with it. shaft play is minimal and im gonna upgrade sometime anyway. so a little oil If any is not going to affect it. i will run one.

Thanks for the opinions, and i just wanted to see what you guys all run but i think there is a lot of myths out there about these things guys have their preferences and i just can justify 50 clams for an airfilter thats gonna get all muddy anyway. so i might as well get a reusable one that i can do what i want to it.
