oil pressure dropping ???
oil pressure dropping ???
ok.... just bought a 91.5 a few weeks ago and i'm tryimg to find out all her quirks. it's in great shape mechanically and has never been tinkered with.....BONE stock, 145,000 mi. ( except i lost that p.o.s. factory muffler somewhere between gillette, wy and the ranch shop)
when you get rolling from a stop you really have to be quick letting the clutch out or the oil pressure gauge drops off the scale and the idiot light comes on.....
it does it in 2nd only, if i go to granny, pressure stays in the safe zone according to gauge....
i just ran the rack and all the filters were changed 1600 mi ago. it runs great and i can't see or smell anything that seems like blow by in the exhaust, the oil looks good also ( no milk or foam or fuel ) .
any clues???? anyone........anyone ?????
thanks

More than likely you just need a new oil pressure sending unit. Its much more likely this is bad than you engine actually having low oil pressure. You can always put a mechanical guage on to confirm.
I think apwatson hit this one right on the head!
On top of the oil filter housing there is an extra 1/8" port that is plugged off. Remove the plug and install a mech. gauge there. Check the pressure. Mine did the same thing you are describing a couple of months ago and when I did a pressure test at the port there was 80 PSI there. Replaced the sender and all is well. Right back where it has always been at.
The OEM sender has a real small hole for the oil pressure to get thru and this can "cake"up over time. The new senders have a slot that gives much more area and should not have the same problems in the future as the one you have now.
