New Tranny, O/D Fixed, but New Problem Arises

Yesterday, October 4th, I finally got my truck back, rebuilt and better than ever. I got a low stall converter installed as well as a shiftkit. The torque converter might not be something as good as a DTT, but it still it quite a bit better than stock. After some break in she seems to work fairly smooth, O/D and all. Apparently the tranny needed a job and the tranny cable coming from the pump was TOAST. At first when I took it out(the truck), it seemed to be pretty restrictive to drive but it took some getting used to and a little break in, that's all.

Anyhow with that all said and done... I've got another problem. This has been occuring for awhile but it now NEEDS to be fixed. See... my speedometer and odometer just quit at random times without rhyme nor reason and would then come back. When it does this I lose my OD and it wont engauge again until it decides to work again. I got to thinking that maybe it has something to do with the poor charge in my battery? I remember reading something about a sensor that messed up the charge as well as the speedo so I'm curious as to maybe this might be it. Hopefully it's not the CPU but even if it is I do have a spare handy .

Oh and just for the record... my speedo doesn't seem to bounce or 'twitch', it just dies.

Any ideas?

Mike

Sounds like a speed sensor problem to me. Start by cleaning and using dielectric grease on the connectors to see if the problem goes away, at least temporarily. Mine started acting the same way and I was able to shoot some contact cleaner inside to get a little more life out of it, but finally had to replace it.

Dead speedo is *usually* a bad VSS (vehicle speed sensor) at the transmission. It sends a signal to the speedometer. You also have to have a signal from the VSS to shift into O/D. Or the wiring could be grounding out somewhere or intermittant. VSS is about $50 from Napa. Easy to install. My transmission is leaky enough that I have to clean the VSS and connector about every 6 months with some electric contact cleaner. I know when I have to do it because the speedo starts jumping ever so slightly and the cruise doesn't hold speed at all. It will jump up and then decelerate. Anyway...that'd be where I would start.
