Well #6 hole is dead. I pulled the head tonight and the edges of the piston are all chewed up. The crank journal could be bad as well but could live.
Anyhow I found a 97 engine with only 20,000 on it. How hard is the swap??
I might go buy the engine in the morning so could anyone help me out ASAP. I really need my truck for work. BAD!!!

You'll need some kind of throttle linkage and a key-on voltage source for the shutdown solenoid. That's about it, I think. It's a pretty straightforward swap, from what I've read...but I've never actually done one. As an aside, how does the cylinder wall look on the '90? Folks melt pistons all the time and just slap another one in there and run it...might get you up on the road a bit quicker...

doesn't the new motor have the bigger mounts, large round deals? I'll watch this thread as my '93 has the little square blocks and I'm hoping to retrofit bigger motor mounts if it's not a prohibitive project. Meanwhile the cyclo-massage I get in my drivers seat keeps me thin and fit ... ( ;-}
Not saying to NOT buy the 97 engine, but if it only has 20K, it has been sitting a LOT through the years, or done a LOT of idling, neither of which is good. Plus, the owner likely (though not certainly) wants a mint for a "low mile" Cummins engine.
It is an acceptable Cummins practice to bore and sleeve the one cylinder and install a new piston. If the bottom end is good, I'd do that. Of course, injectors with a 400psi spread in pop pressures is also acceptable, so take it with a grain of salt.

I thought the walls were alot tougher than the pistons.
how can I not chew up pistons. What causes it??
dpuckett The engine was in a rollover. It was stuck at one time mildly. My friend who has a salvage yard has it. Someone already installed it in something and returned it. Said it smoked. I might rering it or just put it in and work it hard and see how bad the oil consumption is.
Anyhow the 97 engine is only $2000 complete. Isn't that a good deal??

GO for it the mounts on the block are interchangeable. It will bolt right in. Put your mounts,Flywheel housing, starter,and so on. The intake may work with old piece but if not just make a new intercooler tube that will fit. You will need the Shut down relay off a 2nd gen (70amp) its easy to wire I have done a few and can tell you how if you do it. Just a few wires. I think you would be crays not to do it. I think the throttle cable would be easy to fix. I have both trucks in my driveway right now so I can let you know how every thing works. I plan on doing the same swap, Have the a complete engine at the house. All the accessory's on the front of the engine will fit to if they are not on the new engine.
