Missing bolt
I finally have a chance to change my radiator, and while doing so found that one of the timing cover bolts is missing :o It is the one dierctly under the fan hub assembly. I went to the store and got a new one.
My question is before I put it all back together is there anything that I should do? I still have not been able to locate my oil leak in the front, I just degreased the front of the engine again. [yuk] I'm going back out now, so if you could think of anything let me know. Thanks, Michael |
Look hard at the gasket that is between the block and the case the cover attaches to. If its leaking, plenty of work getting that one replaced...

I don't see any oil coming from there... it looks more like under the alt. but above the A/C. But I don't know...
can I start the engine without the belt and fan on for a minute or so to see if I can find it? |
It'll probably idle all day with out the fan belt and fan. Are you going to have the radiator hooked up and filled? The only thing is that the water pump won't be pumping. But seriously there shouldn't be any problems for a few minutes just don't let it get too hot.

I was hoping to do it without the radiator in... literally one minute, I don't think it will get hou that quick.

1 to 2 minutes won't hurt, having someone help start and shut it down helps.

When i changed the front crank seal on my truck I found several of the front cover bolts loose, in fact half of the oil leaking was probably just coming from the darned cover. Whe i reassembeled it I used some Permatex Aviation sealnt on the bolt threads, it should help keep them from vibrating loose but still be able to take it apart in the future.

I tried putting in the new bolt and guess what... the old one is broken inside the cover.
I put everything back together, no other loose/missing bolts, and I don't see a leak I hope it holds up ok. Michael |
