My money's on the flex-plate being cracked around the crankshaft hole.

The flexplate won't knock without a load on it (ie, bolted to the tq converter) Pull that sucker out of there and you'll likely find the source of your noise. A tourque converter won't knock, that I'm aware of. They jsut make heat and leak when the seal goes bad...

I know this is a potAto potato thing, but just to be specific, for those who may not be familiar...a vehicle with a manual tranny has a flywheel, while a vehicle with an automatic tranny has a flexplate. They are two very different animals, to be sure. No disrespect meant to any one persons way of refering to a certain part.

Having done this twice, both times the little inspection cover was covered with fine metal flakes. How did yours look?

The crack(s) in the flex-plate will typically present as hair-line cracks running around the perimeter of the bolt pattern connecting the plate to the crankshaft hub. Look closely for the dark rusty dust streaks where it comes from the cracks

The knocking sound we of the broken flex-plate crowd comes from the actual, normal slight flexing of the plate making the loose edges of the crack grate across one another. It gets transmitted to really weird placed making one think it's something else. If left unadressed, the plate brakes, . . . . . and you're lucky if it just chews up the block/bell-housing adapter plate.

i wont take any chances ill pull it right out

a local shop told me it could be the tc too ill check the flexplate first

that dam oil dipstick tube wont come out
if i have to chamge tc i got my other one but im not sure if its good cause with my other tranny when i started the truck in the morning i put it in gear and i had to wait 3or 4 sec for it to go in gear im not sure if it was the other tranny or the tc itself

I guess that's why it's called a flex plate huh. I too will bet on a cracked flex plate.
