to Intercool or not to intercool that is the Question...

My early 91 of course does not have the intercooler set up. Would it be beneficial to the performance or leave it alone? what would it improve? And how much does a nice used setup go for? I'm thinking on installing the 366 spring maybe getting the intercooler setup, very slight pump boost and replacing the muffler with a straight pipe. I don't want to do a whole lot of mods due to the engine having alot of years and miles. Any suggestions would be great.

it's going to cool your egt's. wich means you can throw more fuel to it i dont have a i/c yet but am in the process of installing one off of a second gen. right now i can hit 1600* on the pyro in 5th gear with the mods in my sig and a 366 spring wich is way too hot. some guys that have done it will chime in sooner or later. but if you plan on making decent constant power it would be a good place to start.i got my i/c for $100 with the hoses and boots but it all depends i guess. most trucks on here have 200,000 miles or more and are making over 200hp. the cummins is a hard motor to kill.

I think its a good question. due to the fact of putting X amount of horse power and torque to a 19 y.o. engine with 300,000 plus miles on it. To me its no different than putting a cam, lifters and fresh heads & gaskets on a small block chevy with 180,000 miles on it. I'm just making sure if I go through with it its not going to blow this dude apart. Granite I'm not doing head work and no, its not a small block. But I drive this monster every day and don't want to cash it in to soon

putting an intercooler on will make life easyer on your motor!!
i doubt you will make any more power but it will cool the air which in turn makes a cooler cyclinder temp which is always good!!

Now that makes perfect sense to me. Thanks guys for your help. Now I just need to find a setup for the little beast. I've read a few of the posts and guys are putting power choke I/C's in place of the Cummin's. Are they that much better?

they are not really better they are just easier to find. but you need one with aluminm tanks case the mighty cummins will blow the plastic ones appart. or you could go second gen like me, but more work is required. on the other hand you have a bigger better cooler.check out the sticky there is a wright-up in the performance section on how to install it.and they can be found pretty easilly too. i got mine with everything to install it of a wrecked truck for $100.oo

How does an IC get 'blown apart'?. or you could go second gen like me, but more work is required. on the other hand you have a bigger better cooler. Also not true. The area is almost identical, according to other posters on here... check out the sticky there is a wright-up in the performance section on how to install it.and they can be found pretty easilly too. i got mine with everything to install it of a wrecked truck for $100.oo
An IC from a 7.3 is what you want.

well when i was looking to get an i/c this is what i was told. i compaired my 2nd gen one to my buddys stoc i/c and it is a little bigger. and as for the ps i/c, again i was told that ford had model years where they had plastic tanks on the ends of it and if you ran too much boost it would "blow" the tanks off of the end of the i/c and i have seen some on ebay like this for 7.3s. so you would want the full aluminum one but i don't remember what years they were on the 7.3s. not trying to give this guy false info here, just trying to help him out a bit like most guys on here have me, since noone else seems to want to.

the member "ace" does a wright up for the ps i/c off of a 2000 ford in the sticky and in the thred there is a picture that shows the stock dodge i/c laying next to the p.s. one and you can clearly see that the p.s. is almost double the sise of the dodge one. just my .02 cents.

I was just talking to a friend of mine and he has one out of and 04 ford super dookie but that is of course the infamous 6.0. I'll get a good look at that one to and see if it will work.

Me too! Not being a Ford guy, I didn't realise they made 7.3's with plastic tanks, I thought they were all aluminium. I'm still not sure how one would blow the tanks off, as the tubes are only so big and can only flow so much air. But maybe the designers didn't think anyone could cram 40 psi+ down a 3" pipe. And I was meaning the PS IC's are about the same area as a 2nd gen, not a 1st. Not meaning to tear strips, just trying to get the story straight. Apparently I was just muddying the waters!

Wait a minute, wasn't the '00 a 7.3? The 6.0 came online in '03, right? I dunno, I have a hard enough time keeping track of what years Dodge models changed.
