Injection pump timing 1.25mm
Injection pump timing 1.25mm
I just had my ip rebuilt and this is what they set it to. Can any one tell me what this means.
Also when I first remove the pump having pinned the engine at TDC with the pin under the ip the key way was not at 6, more like 6:30-7.
Any way, when I got the new pump back it was locked. So try to install and its maxed out in its adjustment as if it were fully advanced. So I removed it and re-pinned the engine to TDC just to be sure and the same thing. So I move the gear a tooth so that I cant retard the pump any more but has lots to advance. Any idea why this might be.
The truck is running and seems to run smoother and does not seem to be out of time but on a diesel I really don't know what it out of time would sound like. Its not sluggish so I don't think its retarded.
Also the pump shop tuned the pump for less fuel than I had it set. I can' t pass 1000deg's F and its slower and makes less boost.
Thanks

1.25mm means 1.25mm of plunger lift at TDC. That is stock setting, about 12.5deg or so.
I hope you unlocked the nut before you turned the engine over.
Slower acceleration and reduced boost/ EGT are typical of advancing the timing too far beyond ideal for your engine. I'd recommend going back to the stock gear tooth, and move the pump toward the head a little (1/16-1/8) to give you about 1.5-1.6mm.

If I move it back a tooth it will be against the head. Were it set it gives me full travel to push it to the head.
The truck is responsive. It does not feel like the timing is retarded I just don't understand why the pump is not more in the of middle of its adjustment.
Thanks

Also the pump was unlocked before cranking.
I looked at the original factory pump marks and its about 3/16" retarded but I moved the gear a tooth. So i don't know if thats a lot or not.
1.25mm is what I think they said. I've got the question into them about this because it does not seem right from what they said they would do.. I may have miss heard what he said and its 1.5mm but I don't know.
Any more input would help
Thanks

I kept everything locked up and itwas not at 6 0'clock either.
I fretted until a buddy who had done a few replacements told me not to worry.
With the woodruff key in the slot and have not turned the engine= OK.
Just set the lift according to the spec and it should run super. Mine does.
