How to measure an exhaust turbine housing

When somebody says that they have a 16 cm housing, where is the measurement taken? Can I take this measurement with simple tools?

I hate to say this but, I think I may have replaced my 16cm turbine housing with a "New 16 cm turbine housing"

I thought I had the stock housing but when I took it off it looked almost exactly like the one I replaced it with. (maybe a little wider) ??

I bought the truck used and was not sure what upgrades had already been done, and don’t have the "eyeballing" technique yet to spot what it is that’s on the motor.

However it still may be the bog monster. When it comes to millimeters can the eye tell, so I'm still left with some hope that I actually did something productive with my very own hands.

The housing that I took off doesn’t have a riveted plate showing part numbers so I was wondering if there is a way to measure. Where can I get a 16 mm measurement?

The measurement is the area of the scrolls, or air passages, at a certain point as they "wrap around" the turbine wheel. Other turbo manufacturers, like Borg Warner and Garrett, give a ratio of the area to the radius. The smaller the area with the same radius, the quicker the spoolup.

Holset gives their measurements in cm^2, at some unknown point. Also, because the radius may differ between different size turbos, a 16cm^2 housing on an H1C will not perform the same as a 16cm^2 housing on an HX40 or the like.

The exhaust housing should have a number cast in the inside of one of the scrolls on the wall. If the housing you replaced is stock, it also may have 18.5 or 21 cast in the outside of the housing, near where it bolts to the manifold, on the firewall side.

Some good stuff there!

Thank you for your insight on the subject. I appreciate it, and always have on other subjects as well; very happy you’re a big part of this forum because you've been so helpful.

I looked again at my older turbine housing and notice what you have mentioned.
Here are some picks of my older turbine housing.

From what I gathered from your good post the one shown in the pic is a 21cm?

If so I'm happy! I’ll keep this one in storage.

Thanks again G-man!

Use it for a doorstop or a paperweight, because it sure doesn't do much good on a turbo.
