how to lower egt's
how to lower egt's
ok well i have my turkc turned up and my egts arent bad but i tow a lot and would just like to see lower #'s. i have the air box swissed for more air, plan on bumping the timming and have a k&n in the mail <thanks to angelfire7> is there anything else i could do to lower them that dosent hurt the pocket book?!
The cheapest thing you can do to lower egt's is ease up on the skinny pedal when you are towing. Other than that, Water meth is a good choice, Porting and polishing the head, exhaust and turbo brings the heat down a lot, Bigger compressor, or twins. Pretty much everything that there is to lower egt's is going to cost a little to a lot of money. Remember, to lower the egt's, you have to move more air through the engine with the amount of fuel that you are running.
If your timing is still stock, bump it a little bit, or set it to 1.4-1.5mm. That will give you a little advance, without endangering your head gasket.
What kind of shape are your injectors in? If they arent up to snuff, they will raise EGTs, but not necessarily smoke. Same for the pump- I dropped EGTs considerably across the board when I had the pump redone in my 91. ALso gained 4mpg.

i haveent checked the injestors but that might be a good idea, i just love the truck and the power, just wish i could rid all the smoke and lower the egts just a bit, and i wish i could smoothen up the ride, and another main goal is mileage bein 16 not makin all the $$ i wish i could!
just try to clear any obstructions in the air system(free flowing airbox, etc.) and i always find that my egts stay lower when i let my turbo wind up. so try and keep as much boost up when on hills to try and clean that air up. If you want to get hooked on drugs too that is always an option; but i like to keep my nose clean for now
that is until i get some money to support the habit. also a four inch downpipe helped me quite a bit.(100 degree average egt drop) and im sure a compressor wheel upgrade couldnt do any harm either.. i think air is the key since you are throwing a decent amount of fuel at it. from what i hear porting is also another option if you have the tim or supplies.a free flowing exhaust would help too blah blah blah. i made mine for under 275$ ~4 inch from turbo back.

Lower EGT. MORE for less
This linkis a good read
Wrap the manifold and put a blanket on the housing. By keeping the gasses fully expanded all the way to the Tribune more energy is transferred into the turbocharger and less under hood heat. Making for a cold air intake with the swischees air box. =more for less. This droped my EGT 100°F accrost the bord 275°f idal 300 in gear +50 for ac/defrost 1psi droped from 600 to 500°f Thire is a 1to3 relationship between IAT and EGT. Increase IAT 100°F =300°f EGT Increase now this is measured@the intake port below the grid heater. Check your IC and radiator Ac for blockage a low effincy IC should pull your IAT down to 50°f above or closer to ambient. An IAT above 130°f is losing power
A 250-HP engine will develop only 240-HP if the air temperature is 130F (54C)
using the same quantity of fuel.
