How do you check ball joints 2 WD HELP!
Took my truck to the shop they did just what i thought they would do find some thing wrong so they can't line the front end on my truck said that the ball joints were bad on the top ones so i brought it home jacked it up and took a bar and picked up on the tire with it jacked up and jerked on the tire every way you can can't find any slack????????????It's wearing the tires on the in side of both front ones????????I don't think they had it on the rack long enough to check any thing you couldn't check the oil that fast?
I usally jack the front end off the ground and use a pry bar and pry off the nuckle to see if you can get movement side to side and up and down.. Its sometimes easier to get right down and look at the area and look for movement.
Put the jack under the lower control arm, as close as possible to the ball joint, to try to keep the spring compressed just like when the truck sits on the ground. Give the wheel a shake at the top and bottom to feel for radial play. Then use a long prybar under the tire and pry up, to check for axial play. Can't remember the specs exactly, some play is generally allowable, but if there isn't any play either direction, you don't have an issue.
When at the shop, always ask the technician to show you where the play is, then ask for the measurement and how far out of the allowable spec it is. If it is still within Dodge's spec, they are fine. Some techs will fail a ball joint if it shows any play at all, but there is no reason to do so.
