How do I remove the ignition key assembly?

I have a steering column out of a '92 or '93 ctd with no key. The steering is locked and the shifter is locked in park.

What are my options here?

1. Can I get a key made using the VIN #?

I am guessing not because you can see the vin from the outside and that would make stealing the vehicle pretty easy.

2. Can I get the lock assy out using my '95 key (which fits but won't turn)? If so how?

3 Should I take the whole column to the locksmith.

4. should I smack the guy in the wrecking yard who lost the key?

Help would be a lot of help, thanks.

They come apart differently depending on std col or tilt. Both designs you need to pull the steering wheel and lock plate to acess the release.with the std col you need to remove the upper housing as well.when you get the cylinder out it can be de coded and a new key made.
