Got in some parts I ordered the other day from intakehoses.com. I just bought the rubber 45 the T clamps and the 6 inch piece of aluminum pipe. The K&N came from a local hot rod shop. I think it came out nice and it makes my new to me hx35 scream [guitar].

Well I'd have to say you did a nice job on the execution BUT I don't think you'll get a lot of thumbs up on the K&N filter. It's the general concensus that they are not a good idea, especially with a diesel engine. Do a search on "K&N" and you'll see what I'm referring to. There are some posts noting actual impeller damage attributed to a oiled air filter.

Ya , I went with a BHAF from Napa rather then the K&N. I also made a heat shield

If that oiled filter is the problem then I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem specific to just k&n. I had over 100k on an oiled filter on my 01 cummins without a hitch. Though I'm not sure how more lubrication would hurt a thing.

K&N's are thinner for the higher flow, and they oil them to make up the difference.

but they still don't filter that well compared to a paper, My trucks had a K&N in it for a long time and when i took my silencer ring out it was black with dust in there.

One thing that will help is a Outerwears Pre-filter, if you're dead set on keeping that KN.

The K&N was the first thing I put into my rig, 10 years ago...I'd better hurry and change it [laugh][laugh][laugh] Mark

Its not the oil, its that with the addition of the Turbo, k&n's media lets small debris through. I have more than one friend that is or was a ford tech and they all said that ford wouldn't do anything with turbos, or blow by if the trucks came in with a k&n filter on them

my truck has 320,000 k with a K&N, also the fact that if you are having issues with dealers denying warranty due to installation of their product they will go to bat for you. seems good to me.

Wow, 320000 k THAT is a lot of miles, [coffee][coffee], seriously I am with you on this one, I have K&N's on all my vehicles that one is made for, I just love them. They don't make one for my bike or my 912, if they did, they would have them too...Mark

Huh, weird. You would think with the cost of replacement filters for Hwy haulers, K&N would be selling a boat load of filters to them....like I said, weird

I'm still a K&N and oiled filter fan. I run a AirAid oiled filter on my 05' Dmax and not a problem in 226,000 miles. The turbo blades are still clean looking and no problems with the MAF sensor.

All my other vehicles run K&N as well. Sure, a BHAF will filter out smaller particles. No denying that, they are great. But what do they flow? How fast to they get clogged with those tiny particles and start dropping off airflow? In all my applications the higher airflow for the size is why I go with oiled filters. That fine dust is like rubbing the cylinder bore with 5,000 grit sand paper. You are far more likely to wear the engine out before you see any knoticable illeffects from the K&N.

Just my $0.02.

Your intake looks good BTW!!!

To each his own but I wont run a K&N. I yanked one out of my Jeep years ago and just went back to a Wix. Yeah I get the idea of cold air, better breathing etc but I am fine with a Wix.

If I could get a BHAF to fit in the tiny bit of room under my Dmax hood I would probibly run one there. Its a work/tow/haul truck that I want to last as long as possible. I keep it on the 65whp/170wtq tune all the time and it does best all around with power, mpg, and towing.

With gas vehicles, the K&N will outlast most motors. The benefits over a 250,000 mile life outweigh the bad. But on a motor you want to run over a million miles, think of all those filter changes.

Funny thing is, it seems like most people here dont actualy drive that much or work their trucks hard. Most are pampered and run low miles. [laugh]

UCTJ 07-08-2011 02:20 PM

Yeah I have considered a BHAF with a pre-filter cover and who knows one day I may do that but as large as the OEM style is I doubt I'll be changing mine every 3-6k miles. As far as babying mine I dont dog it but I am not afraid to make it work either. I am just shy of 260k and want to get it to 400k as it sits. I am working on doing other things to keep it in good shape and looking nice... ie trim parts that are missing, painting wheel wells etc.

I do like the Icebox BHAF. :peel:

400,000 miles and most of these motors still have the crosshatch still visible in the cylinders! Just keep the truck together around the driveline. [laugh]
