help, power steering issues

Hello, well I just bought a 93 ram and the day after I bought it I parked it for the night and when I came out to fire it up the power steering was dead. I thought oh well the pump went out. So I pulled the pump resealed the vacuum pump and reinstalled with a new power steering pump. Fired it up and no power steering. What could be the problem? I pulled the non pressure hose off the pump (return line?) and the fluid was coming out the pump and not the rubber hose coming from the steering box? Any ideas? Please HELP just curious is there any way you can reverse the pump hoses on the steering box?

Hello again, I pulled the pressure hose from the steering box and started the truck. The fluid ran out but pretty slow. How fast should the pressure side pump the fluid out if the power steering box is working good? I cant believe the new napa pump could be bad also. Later

My dad just bought a pump from NAPA and installed it yesterday and had the same problem. So he got a pump from checkers and is going to install it today. I wonder if the NAPA pumps are POS's, or if they got a bad batch or something. oil should pump out pretty good, also you should be able to see the fluid moving in the cap while its running.

apwatson50 Please let me know how it turns out. I was told by a mechanic today to take the truck out on the highway and run it. He says sometimes the vanes sometimes stick and need some rpm to free them. Sounds kind of hokey to me. Later

I'll let you know ASAP. That whole vane sticking thing sounds hokey to me also. My dad said the one from Checkers he could hear the vanes turning inside of it. So hopefully that fixes it. The pump from checkers was $40 cheaper also!!

I was thinking that maybe something happened inside the vacuum pump and the power steering pump wasn't recieving any power. know what I mean? But he said the shaft was turning so it has to be in the pump.

Ive never replaced a PS pump on a diesel but on the old gassers Ive always had to bleed them out by cranking the wheel side to side a dozen or so times to get the air out of them.
