Head studs

Do I have to drill and tap the block for ARP studs?

12mm studs will bolt up.

You MIGHT have to run a bottom tap in there to clean things out and make sure they are deep enough. Our trucks also need the bottom sides of the valve covers ground flat to keep from hitting the tops of the studs.

I know a few trucks that have them.

Not sure, but the 2nd gen 12 valve studs work fine. You will need to pull the head and bottom tap the holes or the studs will interfere with the rocker covers.

The set of studs I have are not supposed to interfere with the rocker covers, but the rocker pedestal has to be machined because that stud is shorter so it won't interfere with the rocker cover.

I bottom tapped the threads in the bottom of my block and also had the rocker pedestals machined. My valve covers will sit flat on the head with no gaskets.

I don't have any metric taps. What do I need?

Anything serious.. or just cutting down the top a little... Are the pedestals different from the P-Pumped engines??? Never heard of this having to be done...

Clean holes and the webbing taken off the bottom of the valve covers will be enough to let the covers seal up.

MUCH CHEAPER than mechine work.

when you stud the head, how much does it gain with the stock head gasket? what kind of head gaskets are best, and how exactly is a head "o-ringed" tha common phrase i hear from some people?

Pedestals are the same on 12 valves, I'd have to look at my directions, but I think the cut is around .200" deep where the nut sits. I saw someone had them already machined for exchange on a web site somewhere.

On my truck I had to grind away the webbing just where the stud contacted the valve cover. Did no machining and they were the stock 2nd gen ARP studs that I used.

No machining here on my 1st gen or my brothers. Just bottom tapped and a little bit of grinding on the valve cover where the stud hit.
