GTX3582R, s363/68, GT3788R, FMW s362/68

any reason why nobody has ever run a GTX3582R on our trucks/any 12v cummins?

Now I know people go with borg warner turbos because they are cheaper, but why hasn't anyone tried this turbo, like ever. Why this over a gt3788r, when the gtx3582 flows more air?

Size for size, the biggest turbo is the 3788R, yet on a compressor map, it flows the least.

an s363/68 flows 75lbs/min and is the cheapest
an s362/68 FMW is a new wheel from borg warner that flows 74lbs/min and is comparatively expensive to the s363/68 turbo

the gtx3582r is size for size possibly the smallest overall turbo, but it flows the most out of all 4 turbos cold side. Why not use one on our trucks? it's bigger than most turbos people use for our trucks anyway. Like it's bigger than an he351, or an s300g. and seems to flow somewhere around 76lbs/min

now the gt3788r is the biggest turbo of the 4 but has been put on our trucks with success. It's proven to be better than a s362/65. the older style s362 ET wheel not the new one I mentioned a couple lines up that came out within the last year or so.

looking through the drawings, it looks like the gtx3582r has a 3" v-band outlet on the exhaust housing. That sucks... Would be a nice stock replacement that flows a whole lot of air I guess!! lol

also noticed the oil outlet and inlets are different. Wouldn't even be a direct bolt in for a stock truck. I guess I answered my own question. I wonder if the compressor housings and wheels are interchangeable between the 2 garrett turbos... maybe that's what they do for the stage 3 kit...

I'm planning swinging a gtx4094 on a spool flange.

I spoke with Tom at turbo resource about it and the 35 is just too small. Even as a secondary in twins. It flows more air on the compressor side but it has a smaller turbine. Plus the housing options aren't diesel friendly. You end up with a turbo that could have surging issues and overall not well matched for our application. Even though the cold side is putting out lots of air the hot side is so tight it gets hot which ramps up drive pressures. I run a 3788r and it will surge on low end under load. A smaller compressor would fix this. Tom does not recommend the stage 3 on a 12 valve without a cam or head porting because it can surge. Its moving more air than the motor can chew at lower rpm. Mine will surge at 1800 (only under loads of 20 psi or more) and I have a helix 2 cam. Get above 2200 and it wont surge at all. A compressor running more air with a smaller exhaust wheel would be worse.

it's really too bad the gtx3582 wheel couldn't be fit on the gt3788 frame some how... seems like an amazing turbo for a motor with porting and a cam.

And I just don't get how a 63/68 s300 doesn't seem to surge when the gtx3582 is pretty much the same size but will supposedly, or probably surge really bad.

And yeah, I have a hamilton cam and my turbo will surge as well under the exact same conditions. over 20psi at or below 1800rpm, which is really easy to do. If I open my valet I could probably hit 30+psi by or before 1600rpm before it will bark extremely violently. It runs SUPER cool at 35-40psi too. But if I open the valet and let it hit peak boost of over 50psi, it gets ridiculously hot

Garrett's wheel size vs cfm is just way different from other brands. Their compressor wheels are designed different and the size comparison really doesn't give a good idea of the difference. To make it even harder to compare try finder actual compressor maps for a s300 based turbo. Kinda hard to come by. And I would be willing to bet Tom probably could put a gtx82 wheel on a 37 frame. Probably really pricey and again you may run in to surging issues because the volume of air that wheel moves. I am considering downgrading mine to a stage 1 or 2. Then maybe a 4294r below that!

why downgrade though? why not just put the s300 back on? or did you sell it?

garrett compounds would be amazing. do it! if money allows of course. why the 4094 and not a gtx4202 or even a gtx4294r? the 4094 seems like a weird size as a big charger on compound setup on a cummins motor.

On a sidenote, I find it VERY strange that my turbo didn't surge when it was on my ppump motor, but does surge really bad on my hamilton cammed VE motor below 1800. Same turbo same motor. Different injector pump and better cam, and it surges, what? lol
