It's broke. ;)

Probably a worn out 3-4 shift fork. The trans will have to be removed unless you want to cut a big hole in the trans tunnel so you can get the top cover off.

These guys can get you the parts to fix it.

Hey Smokesplitter,

I whacked mine open with the cut-off tool...then I made a new (bigger) cover to go over the opening.
Use a body hammer or ball-peen (round end) to form it to the trans hump and hammer a couple ridges in it for stiffening.

Now I can access the shifter case any old time...and that's where you'll find the shift forks.

As long as there's no build-up of aluminum where the fork sits you should just be able to replace the shift fork, although the trans section of the FSM has no instructions on how to do it.
It just says to replace it as a unit.

I had a problem with mine jamming in gear...I put a rebuilt shifter case on and been slappin' gears ever since. The rebuilt case cost me $200 (no core) from a place out here in IL...well worth it to me.

Vinny

A 2wd tranny comes out in 45 mins, just rip it out and put it on the bench.

Smokespitter,
Fill in your profile and location and maybe you can find somebody local to volunteer to give you a hand.

I got a fork for 3rd and 4th gear for $40. Replaced it and works fine. It was caused by excessive play in tranny where the gears come apart to remove. A few new bearings and no play in the shaft and all my gears back.
