Fuel pickup/ending unit

I pulled the bed off my truck to inspect the tank for trash and the screens for crud and to figure out why my fuel level indicator doesn't work correctly.

I noticed that the top and bottom half of the assembly are secured by 3 screws. I could SLIDE the two parts up and down! That did not seem correct? I am wondering if when fuel gets hot that this moves up and down and might cause some problems?

When I replaced the level sending unit I put put the unit back together with washers under the screws to hold it rigid. Is this good or bad?

Thanks,
Brian

I 'think' it was a multi-fit application and the depth of the pickup was factory adjusted for the particular tank it was being installed in. Heard that somewhere. Could be wrong.
