Flexplate Break?
Flexplate Break?
Drove to work yesterday, pulled in the end of the road and the truck made a bang, jerked and quit moving. So I stopped put in park, tried to stick it in gear again and nothing. So out of shear stupidity I shut the truck off. Now you can hit the key and the only thing that happens is the starter spins, won't turn the engine over. So, does anyone know something I don't or did I just break the flexplate? Thanks for any help.
Sounds to me like you took the center out of your flex plate.
Get a new one from Cummins. Use the second gen part number for your replacement. (they are a little stronger)
I'll hunt up a part # for ya.

3975464 <--- Cummins part number for the second gen flexplate (this is the latest number)
I got one from my local CumminsNW distributor for $120 about 2yrs ago. I haven't a clue what they run now.
Good luck!

Sure sounds like it.
Climb under your heap and remove the little access cover right there under the bellhousing. If it's broken such as you describe, you should be able to see it.
Years ago when I broke mine, I simply removed all the supports for the rear of the transmission (and transfer case), and replace most of the bellhousing bolts with long bolts. About 10" or so if I remember correctly. That allowed me to unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate without unplugging the trans input shaft from the converter (don't want to damage any seals). The long bolts allowed me to simply slide the complete trans back so as to allow enough room for me to reach in and remove/replace the flexplate. The rear of the trans/transfer case was supported by my floorjack.
It worked.
Good luck.

I don't know what the Cummins/Dodge 2nd gen replacement plate costs, but you might consider this ~
As found here ~ http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm
It's what I now run. It's much more robust as compared to OEM.

(Old nested into the new one)
#CF1. Cummins Diesel SFI 29.1 certified flexplate for the 1983 - 2001 5.9L Cummins B series. Thirty percent thicker than the OEM flex plate. 15.35 inch X 152 teeth. Read the directions before installing this flexplate, there will be no refunds on installed flexplates. Cost $159.00

Hey thanks for the help guys. I haven't gotten around to getting it apart yet, probably monday morning. I have a flexplate from the Crew Cab NV swap so I figured I'd just use that since my truck is getting tore down in a month or so. Thanks again, just wanted to make sure that's what you guys thought it was too.
